When to hire a Database Administrator
Because unmanaged databases fail quietly until they fail loudly. A strong DBA prevents the outages you never want to explain.
Start with the work, not the title
List the database engines, versions, hosting environments, and applications this person will support. Define the boundaries between database, infrastructure, security, and application ownership, plus the maintenance and incident responsibilities the DFW employer expects.
Signs you need this role: Backups nobody has tested, recurring slowdowns, or a database managed 'on the side' by a developer.
A Database Administrator owns database operations across the platforms specified by an employer. A SQL Server DBA is a platform-focused version of that role. Database Developers primarily build schemas and database code; do not assume every DBA position also includes application development.
What we look for in a Database Administrator
Screening is matched to your environment and the work this person will own. These are useful areas to cover, not a generic keyword checklist.
Platform-specific administration
Ask how the candidate monitors and maintains the engines you actually run. Probe configuration, capacity, patch planning, and permissions rather than assuming experience on one database transfers directly to another.
Recoverability and resilience
Discuss how backup success is verified through restores, how recovery objectives are set, and what the candidate does when a dependency prevents an application from recovering.
Operational ownership
Explore incident triage, change records, escalation, and handoffs. Look for evidence of repeatable procedures that other team members can use, not reliance on one person's memory.
SpakClean is not a general staffing agency. We recruit for data roles only. Because we also build and fix data systems, we understand the difference between someone who only has the right keywords on a resume and someone who can actually do the work.
As your DFW data hiring partner, we clarify must-have skills, evaluate technical and business fit, and present a shortlist of qualified data candidates. Review our recruiting process before starting a search.
